We Meet You Where You Are

During the first semester of my MFA in narrative nonfiction writing at the University of Georgia, the program director and founder, the late Valerie Boyd, said something I’ll never forget:

"We meet you where you are in your writing."

That was probably the most welcoming and affirming statement I could’ve heard at that time because I was just learning how to write in a true narrative format. I came from a PR/communications/marketing background, and I felt major imposter syndrome those first few days of writing. But I was reminded that even seasoned writers at times feel like they fall short in their writing quality.

Keeping my own insecurities in mind, I decided when I founded Lucky Dog Press that I would adopt Valerie's vision of helping writers write wherever they are in the writing process, whether a seasoned writer or someone who's been letting their first story unfold.

I enjoy coaching authors through scenes in chapters, idea by idea, paragraph by paragraph, word by word. We shuffle, we streamline, we edit for content and grammar. It's one-on-one work at its greatest. I also enjoy working with writers who need an editor in their completed draft. And, of course, writers whose work has already been thoroughly edited but needs another set of eyes (or two) before publishing are always welcome.

At Lucky Dog Press, writers will always have input in their content and design. My feeling is that if a person has spent this much time writing their story, this is their baby. They need to have input into what happens to their book after their story is put on the page and how it appears on the shelf.
